Smart lighting at Hufthamar

The project at Hufthamar ferry terminal, just south of Bergen, was launched to optimize energy consumption and reduce light pollution while maintaining safety for travelers.

2025-05-08

At the Hufthamar ferry terminal near Bergen, 230 Fagerhult luminaires with Citygrid were installed to reduce energy usage and light pollution – while keeping travelers safe.

– The installation process was remarkably smooth. The only real challenge was mounting the Citygrid On pole sensor at eight meters, but even that was manageable, says Henrik Berg, smart lighting adviser at Fagerhult Norway.

Vestland County Municipality and the installer sought a smart lighting solution that would automatically adjust based on traffic intensity.

– With Citygrid, unnecessary energy usage is eliminated. Residents can even see the stars again, says Henrik Berg, Smart Lighting Adviser at Fagerhult Norway.

The system dims down when no movement is detected and gives full remote access via an online portal – no site visits needed.

By implementing smart control and monitoring solutions from Citygrid, the municipality has been able to substantially reduce energy consumption while keeping the ferry terminal well-lit and secure. Additionally, the client can access operational data through an online portal, eliminating the need to visit the terminals in person.
